Skull Practice #1

Oil direct on plywood panel (Summer 2021)

The skull practice was made half way into my color theory journey as an attempt to practice using more primary colors and understand multicolored light sources. I was set to possess the skills necessary to work the subtleties of secondary colors and earthy tones.

The painting turned out better than I expected. I didn’t understand at the time but this was because it was worked on a low texture panel. I was clueless about canvas prep and worked on panels because they were cheap enough for practices. But the absence of rough texture on pressed panels gave me more control of my textures and forms thus resulted in work I couldn’t make before. I was thrilled to see myself mysteriously do things I thought I was incapable of. Skull became one of my favorite practices.

This work is not fully mine. It is referenced from a photo I failed to trace back to it’s owner. Reverse searches lead me to random tattoo studios. If you know the original photographer, I will grateful to any help in finding them as without their permission, I can not put this on any commerical product.
