This too shall pass…

100 cm x 100 cm, wooden MDF board, two panels with 10 cm gap, oil paint, gold leaf, silver spray (Late 2021)

This painting was my first attempt at a personal and grand original piece with storytelling elements. At the time, I was aware that my skillset was not ready for such ambitions. But an opportunity in a competition pushed me out of my box.

The painting is made with two panels. The top panel has the chest opening cut out, and in between the panels nested is the clay sculpture of the chest cavity.

The piece was an attempt to portray the healing after trauma, to move on from being wounded to growing kinder, not just more robust. “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” is the saying. But I would like to add to it “stronger isn’t always better” Our circumstances sometimes force us to become survivors and warriors, turning us hostile, paranoid, and bitter. We lose faith in kindness and humanity. Only when such dangers pass, and we get a chance to heal, let go and grow kind again. Only then can we start living once again.

In all honesty, I am not happy with this piece. I wasn’t even back when I made it. It was above my skill set and rushed. I hope to revisit the idea and meaning one day to give it a new life.
